Autumn Pool
"Autumn Pool, South Fork of Cave Creek" The lower reaches of Cave Creek's south fork, near the town of Portal enjoy ample shade from sycamores and the occasional maple, the creek starts to flow mostly underground in this season, occasionally pooling. In the remote southeastern corner of Arizona, at the end of a dirt road over the Chiricahua Mountains, the former stronghold of Gerionmo and his tribe, flows a rare perennial stream. I visited there last November and spent a glorious morning photographing this wilderness site. Here, the mid-morning glow of the Cave Creek cliffs is reflected in the flowing stream. At this point, the flow is retreating beneath the rocks.
