This image transports you to a fantastic setting in the Chiricahua wilderness of remote southeastern Arizona, close to Mexico. The incredible formation in the distance, "Cochise Head", was formed 27 millions years ago by a volcanic eruption 1,000 times more powerful than the 1980 Mount St. Helens eruption. The stone, named rhyolite, is from the accumulated volcanic ash. The forground and stone columns are all rhyolite. Lichen colors the stones green. To reach this view I hiked several miles with bright full moonlight on a cool dry morning. The trail was passable without a light.
